Man killed in fire; stove unattended

Sunday, July 26, 1998

The Cincinnati Enquirer

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP -- A Springfield Township man died in an early morning fire Saturday at his home.

Firefighters were called to 1906 Fallbrook Lane about 2:30 a.m. They found David S. Healey, 33, dead inside his home, said Alfie Jones, shift commander for the Forest Park Fire Department.

Fire investigators suspect the blaze was started when food was left unattended on the stove.

A person passing by the home near the intersection of Fallbrook and Deerhorn Drive noticed the flames and called for help, said Mary Schur, who lives next door. The passerby woke neighbors to try to douse the flames with a garden hose, but by that time flames where shooting out the back of the split-level home, she said.

Firefighters soon arrived and were able to put out the blaze. There were no injuries.

Mr. Jones said investigators are trying to determine why Mr. Healey left the food unattended and why he did not escape.

No smoke detectors were found in the house.

Mr. Jones said the blaze caused an estimated $50,000 to $60,000 in damage to the house.
