Downtown still navigable despite festival, closings

Sunday, July 26, 1998

Fort Washington Way appears to be fairly hospitable for the thousands of out-of-town visitors for the Coors Light Festival this weekend. Police said traffic was not much of a problem, despite an unusual number of cars coming downtown on a weekend. Those visiting the city expressed mild surprise at the ease in which they were able to arrive.

"I was familiar with the city from coming here last year, and it looked a little stranger than normal, but I was able to get off at Pete Rose Way and park without a problem," said Arthur Wright, 27, of New York City, who arrived in town from the north via Interstate 75. Maurice Hazard, 42, of Golf Manor, and his brother, Sean Hazard, 31, of Evanston, cruised down Interstate 71, got off at the Gilbert Street exit and meandered into downtown without a problem.

There was potential for confusion: Drivers who would normally get off at some of the closed Fort Washington Way exits were routed to streets closed because of the festival, such as Fifth and Seventh streets. But the streets were not closed at the exits, so cars leaving the highway could quickly turn north or south and navigate the downtown area with only a few minutes' delay.
