Another fire at Carew Tower

Wednesday, July 29, 1998

For the second time in less than a week, a small fire sent smoke through parts of the Carew Tower downtown Tuesday night, forcing an evacuation. Four people were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire started in the lower level food court when plastic foam was dumped in a large trash bin. Streets around the building were closed for several hours while firefighters worked.

The 49-story tower was evacuated Friday for about an hour when an elevator motor on top of the building caught on fire and sent smoke through upper levels of the building.

The building, which opened in 1930, has offices, stores, restaurants and the Omni Netherland Plaza Hotel.
