Escape nets inmates extra time

Thursday, July 30, 1998

BY KYM LIEBLER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LEBANON -- A pair of inmates who escaped June 23 from the Warren County Jail pleaded guilty Wednesday in Warren County Common Pleas Court to two counts each of aggravated robbery and one count of escape.

Rashad Ajin Gary, 20, of Dayton and Matthew David Henderson, 19, of Fairborn faced the aggravated robbery charges and one count each of aggravated assault after they robbed a Springboro gas station together in January.

The men were awaiting trial on the robbery and assault charges when they joined another inmate and escaped from the jail by squeezing through a chain-link roof covering the jail's recreation area. They were caught two days later, hiding in a woman's garage in Lebanon off Ohio 123 South.

Common Pleas Judge P. Daniel Fedders sentenced the men to 12 years in prison. They will serve three consecutive four-year sentences for the aggravated robbery charges and the escape charge.

Johnny Paul Coffman, 24, of Middletown was apprehended June 27 in Middletown and also has been charged with escape. Mr. Coffman was in jail for violating probation.
