Prisoner fights with officers

Friday, August 7, 1998

BY MARIE McCAIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LINCOLN HEIGHTS -- Two Lincoln Heights police officers were injured Thursday after being attacked by a prisoner.

Sgt. Sandra Stevenson and Officer Christopher Pitsch were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital following the 1 p.m. scuffle. Officer Pitsch was treated for bruises. Sgt. Stevenson suffered back injuries and was hospitalized overnight, Chief Ernie McCowen Jr. said.

The prisoner, Eugene Jenkins Jr., is being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center and has been charged with two counts of felonious assault on a police officer.

He is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing today, police said. The scuffle occurred as Sgt. Stevenson was walking Mr. Jenkins from the police department's lockup, 1201 Steffens Ave., to a cruiser driven by Officer Pitsch. Mr. Jenkins was being transferred to the justice center.

The chief said Mr. Jenkins attacked Sgt. Stevenson, throwing her to the ground and stepping on her back.

Officer Pitsch and several other officers restrained Mr. Jenkins and got him back inside the lockup, where he kicked Officer Pitsch in the ribs.

Roberta Harris was watching television inside her house when she heard loud noises about a block away outside the police department. "I came out and saw a woman lying on the ground and three or four other officers holding this man who was still fighting," she said.

Mr. Jenkins had been arrested earlier and charged with criminal trespass after a disturbance inside a barbershop on Jackson Avenue. Mr. Jenkins' outburst surprised the officers, Chief McCowen said, adding that he had been calm and cooperative. It was not known why he started to fight.
