Grant helps center help addicts' children

Friday, August 7, 1998

A Bond Hill center for children of addicts has received nearly $40,000 to provide education and activities that promote the prevention of drug abuse.

The Giving Life A Dream (GLAD) House will use the money, provided by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services, to create a club for children ages 6 to 10 while they stay at the center as their mothers receive treatment.

GLAD House is located on the campus of St. Aloysius Orphanage.

A local doctor who has helped the people of Croatia during its civil war has been honored.

Dr. Freidoon Ghazi, director of medicine at Franciscan Hospital-Mount Airy Campus has received the Humanitarian City Award from Zadar, Croatia. The award included a gold medal.

Dr. Ghazi and others have traveled to Zadar six times since 1995, training a Croatian cardiac team and supplying it with modern equipment.

Air conditioners, fans are sought for needy

Franciscan at St. John needs fans and air conditioners for its clients during the hot summer weather.

The fans can be dropped off at 1229 Main St. in Over-the-Rhine from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or, for after-hours delivery, call 241-2186.

The fans will be distributed to crowded homes, senior citizens or people with medical conditions such as respiratory problems and heart disease.

Woman is 2nd suspect arrested in robbery

A second person was arrested in connection with the Wednesday afternoon robbery of the Northside Bank and Trust Co. in Colerain Township. Jennifer L. Pierce, 25, of the 300 block of South Vine Street, faces a charge of complicity to robbery, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department.

Information on the circumstances of her alleged crime and on her arrest was not available Thursday.

Police arrested Vincent D. Walsh, 29, of the 3000 block of Earl Road, Groesbeck, as he ran from the bank, 9315 Colerain Ave., shortly after noon Wednesday. He allegedly held up a teller with a toy handgun, fled the bank and was immediately spotted by a Colerain Township police officer who gave chase and took Mr. Walsh into custody.

Park invites viewers for meteor shower

The Corps of Engineers will offer an evening of falling-star watching Saturday at the visitor center at William H. Harsha Lake at East Fork Lake State Park.

The sky will sparkle for about a week with the Perseid meteor showers' annual return. On a clear night, numerous meteors are visible in areas where lights do not obscure the sky. The event, from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., will be canceled if there is cloudy or inclement weather. Volunteers will have a telescope set up.

Lawn chairs and blankets are suggested. Information: 797-6081.
