Local golfer wins Ohio Am

Saturday, August 8, 1998

CANTON, Ohio -- Julie Palmer withstood Martha Dement's late charge to become the Women's Ohio State Amateur Championship winner Friday.

Palmer, of Cincinnati and a student at the University of Kentucky, ended up one hole better than Dement, of Defiance, after 36 holes of a very competitive match play final.

If the difference were strokes, the two might still be at it. Each was 12-over 158 on two tours through the 5,785-yard, par 73 Brookside Country Club course.

Going into the final nine, Palmer was up by five holes. But a birdie on the 17th hole narrowed Palmer's edge to one hole. Dement had a chance twice to force extra play on the 18th starting with a birdie putt from 12 feet, but she took three strokes to put it in the hole. Both golfers shot a six on the 400-yard, par-5 last hole.
