Superintendent's first day of school
Adamowski begins tenure, will attend board meeting

Monday, August 10, 1998

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Today is Steven J. Adamowski's first day on the job as superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools.

He'll attend his first school board meeting as superintendent at 7 tonight at district headquarters, 2651 Burnet Ave.

Board members in June approved a three-year contract with Mr. Adamowski, formerly associate secretary of education for the Delaware Department of Education. He will make $136,200, plus perks.

He replaces J. Michael Brandt, who retired last month after seven years as superintendent. Mr. Brandt recently was hired full time at Xavier University.

Mr. Adamowski's hiring drew intense criticism from some community leaders, who worried he did not have enough urban experience. They also complained that school board members did not involve the community enough in the superintendent search and selection.

Leaders of those groups, including the Baptist Ministers Conference of Greater Cincinnati, have said they will set aside their objections to work with the new superintendent.

Mr. Adamowski beat out nine other contenders for the job.

He has promised to continue reforms started under the district's strategic plan Students First.
