Man apparently killed by a car

Tuesday, August 11, 1998

FAIRFIELD -- A 21-year-old Cincinnati man died from head trauma after he was apparently struck by a motor vehicle, Butler County Coroner Dr. Richard P. Burkhardt ruled Monday.

Jolon Perazzo was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital Fairfield at 3:23 a.m. Sunday. A resident of the 5900 block of Flagg Drive noticed him lying in the street and called police, the coroner's office said.

An employee of the coroner's office said a motorist later turned himself in to Fairfield police.

Attempts to obtain further information from Fairfield police were unsuccessful Monday.

Heel device tested for osteoporosis use

Another low-cost test is available locally for women concerned about developing osteoporosis.

University Hospital is testing a device that targets the heel as a way to measure bone density. The Achilles+ test device, made by the Lunar Corp., involves a one-minute ultrasound test done while the patient's foot is placed in temperature-controlled water.

Osteoporosis is a disease marked by loss of bone mass, which can increase the risk of bone fractures as people age.

The heel test is the second low-cost option to be studied recently by University Hospital. Tests continue for a device called accuDEXA, which measures bone density with a low-power X-ray of the finger. For information about the new heel test, call 558-9026.

Boys & Girls Club volunteer honored

A local man has been honored for volunteer service to the Boys & Girls Club of Cincinnati.

Willie Jones, a city fireman who coached an undefeated club basketball team this year, was honored by MasterCard International and received a trip to July's Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Denver.

He is one of 30 winners, one of whom will be named national volunteer of the year and receive a trip to the 1998 World Series.

Former UC player indicted on assault

Former University of Cincinnati basketball star D'juan Baker was indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury Monday on a felonious assault charge.

Mr. Baker, 21, who was a senior guard last season, is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend July 30 in Clifton.

She told police he threw a flower pot at her head, which cut her head, eye and shoulder. She said he also punched her several times. She was treated at University Hospital and released.

Clyde Bennett II, attorney for Mr. Baker, said his investigation and conversation with Mr. Baker lead him to believe the charge is unsubstantiated.

Goshen man dies in Ohio 132 crash

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP -- A Goshen man died Monday in a single-car crash on Ohio 132, north of Ohio 28 in Clermont County.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Louis York, 71, of the 6500 block of Shiloh Drive, drove his GMC truck off the right side of the roadway about 12:10 p.m., hitting a mailbox and a fence. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

4 teens end 2-hour hostage situation

CANNELTON, Ind. -- Four teen-age boys jumped and pinned a man who had been holding them at gunpoint, ending a two-hour police standoff in which the man had broken into a home and taken the boys and a woman hostage, authorities said.

James C. May, 34, of Hawesville, Ky., was arrested shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday, state police said.

He remained in the Perry County jail on a warrant for illegal possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and on five counts of kidnapping while armed with a deadly weapon.
