Heel device tested for osteoporosis use
Another low-cost test is available locally for women concerned about developing osteoporosis.
University Hospital is testing a device that targets the heel as a way to measure bone density. The Achilles+ test device, made by the Lunar Corp., involves a one-minute ultrasound test done while the patient's foot is placed in temperature-controlled water.
Osteoporosis is a disease marked by loss of bone mass, which can increase the risk of bone fractures as people age.
The heel test is the second low-cost option to be studied recently by University Hospital. Tests continue for a device called accuDEXA, which measures bone density with a low-power X-ray of the finger. For information about the new heel test, call 558-9026.
