DELHI TOWNSHIP -- Carol Sutfin was surprised Tuesday when she looked out her window and saw police tape across the doorway and windows of the quiet single-family brick house across the street.
Home to brothers Daniel and Kenneth Cooney, 3917 Delhi Pike is where police allege 38-year-old Daniel took a .22-caliber handgun and shot his older brother three times in the head Sunday.
Arraigned Tuesday in Hamilton County Municipal Court before Judge Guy Guckenberger, Daniel Jon Cooney pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder. His bond was set at $1 million cash.
In his 911 call, a weeping Mr. Cooney told a dispatcher that his brother had shot himself in the head and that he had attempted to revive him by "trying to blow through his lips."
"I was in the shower," he told the dispatcher. "I heard (the shots). . . . He's on the couch, and I can't feel no pulse. . . . I can't feel nothing. . . . I don't know if he shot himself a couple of times or what."
A neighbor who did not want to be identified described the brothers as quiet and friendly, but they kept to themselves.
Police would not comment on a motive, and their mother declined to discuss what happened.
"I've seen the ambulance there before," Mrs. Sutfin said of her neighbors' house. "I thought (the residents) were kind of sickly. I thought this time maybe somebody had had a heart attack or fallen down some stairs."
According to court records, Delhi Township police went to the home shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday because of the 911 call and found the body of 45-year-old Kenneth Cooney.
On Monday, after questioning Daniel Cooney, investigators arrested him. Daniel Cooney has two 1993 convictions for theft and burglary and had been sentenced to three months and five years probation.
A three-year resident of the tidy, well-manicured neighborhood several hundred feet west of Cincinnati city limits, Mrs. Sutfin said she regularly saw the brothers at a local grocery store. "They'd wave and smile," she said.
"Everybody seems very nice. I wouldn't think something like that could happen here."
