Boy in serious condition after falling into pool

Friday, August 14, 1998

BY CATHERINE TSAI
The Cincinnati Enquirer

FORT MITCHELL -- A boy found unconscious in the indoor pool of Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center on Thursday was revived by staff members after he apparently wandered away from a classroom, police said.

The boy, whose name and age were not disclosed, was listed in serious condition Thursday night at Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Sgt. Steve Hensley of Fort Mitchell police said staff members noticed the boy was missing that afternoon after they took a routine head count. When workers found him a few minutes later, he was not breathing.

Barbara Howard, executive director of Redwood, said her staff administered life-saving techniques. The boy was responsive by the time a life squad arrived.

Ms. Howard said staff followed procedure, but she would not elaborate on what those procedures are. She declined to answer other questions, saying the center is investigating the incident. Sgt. Hensley said no one else was in the pool area when the boy fell in. The pool is enclosed by two doors with high windows, and its deepest point is 4 feet.

Redwood's mission is to help children and adults with disabilities learn to lead functional lives.
