HANOVER TOWNSHIP -- An 18-year-old Indiana man whose car crashed and burst into flames early Friday was able to pull a female passenger to safety -- but a second passenger was trapped in the wreckage and died.
Martin Boyd, 44, of Fremont, Ind., was pronounced dead at the scene on U.S. 27 near McGonigle Drive.
The Butler County Coroner's Office has not released a ruling on whether Mr. Boyd died from injuries or from the fire.
The driver, Joseph M. Waters of Angola, Ind., was treated at Fort Hamilton-Hughes Memorial Hospital in Hamilton and released. The female passenger, Amie M. Havener, 19, of Fort Wayne, Ind., was in good condition at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
The car Mr. Waters was driving, a 1987 Chrysler LeBaron, was northbound on U.S. 27 just after 4 a.m. when it went off the right side of the road and drove onto a guardrail, which punctured the car's fuel tank. The vehicle then crashed into a tree, said Butler County Sheriff's Capt. G. Michael Grimes.
The trio had taken a trip to Kentucky and was headed home when the crash occurred, said Chief Deputy Richard K. Jones.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation Friday; no charges had been filed.
