Based on the perks offered the players, it's easy to understand why the Great American Insurance ATP Championship is one of the most popular on the U.S. tour.
Besides receiving free transportation (Top 32 Mercedes Benz and rental to others), players receive a wide array of entertainment choices, including golf and passes to many other events.
"The most popular activity is golf," said Ellen Miller, co-chairman of players services. "The least popular is the Reds. We've only had one request for baseball tickets."
Magnus Larsson is sure that he has played more golf this week than any other player. The ATP Championship semifinalist has only played one night tennis match, which has left him plenty of time for his favorite hobby. He said he has played up to 18 holes every day except Tuesday, when he had a 7 p.m. match.
His best score: 76. His worst: About 100.
"It's a good thing to go out and get away from tennis," he said. "I don't think it's bad for you."
Miller pointed out that it's hard to gauge the popularity of Paramount's Kings Island and the Beach Water Park because the players need only show their badge to gain admittance.
"We also provide snacks in the Players Lounge throughout the day, and they can eat lunch and dinner free at the Championship Club," Miller said. "Tickets are also available for the movies and Riverbend."
All of the players are also given free housing at the nearby Marriott Hotel off Fields Ertel Road.
"I love roller coasters," said 21-year-old American Jan-Michael Gambill, who lost to Pete Sampras on Thursday. "The Beast is the best roller coaster in the world that I've been on."
