5 of school district's top positions vacant

Sunday, August 16, 1998

As Cincinnati Public Schools' new superintendent, Steven Adamowski's first few months on the job promise to be packed with meetings, school tours -- and job interviews.

At least five of the district's top positions are vacant.

Some managers -- hired by former Superintendent J. Michael Brandt -- have resigned to pursue other interests after Mr. Brandt announced his retirement. Others simply retired.

"He's walking into a vacuum," Cincinnati Federation of Teachers President Tom Mooney said.

Assistant Superintendent Rosa Blackwell, who oversees personnel issues, will screen applicants with Mr. Adamowski. School board members must approve Mr. Adamowski's picks.

Ms. Blackwell said she expects some of the positions will be filled within two months. The vacancies

also offer the new superintendent a chance to restructure if needed, Ms. Blackwell said.

"We want to move as quickly as possible to begin to fill the vacancies," Ms. Blackwell said.

Mr. Adamowski started Monday as superintendent. Mr. Brandt retired last month after seven years as superintendent.

The open positions include:

  • Business executive to replace Steven Ottemann, who left last month.

  • Facilities director to replace Steve Temming, who left last month.

  • Technology director to replace Mary Jo Castor, who retired this year.

  • Human resources director to replace Haze Flowers, who left last month, and a human resources manager, Barb Schroder, who retired earlier this year.

  • Public affairs director to replace Monica Solomon, who left last spring.
