Expressway closing Friday night
Will reopen Saturday if work complete

If you are planning to use Fort Washington Way Friday night or Saturday morning, change your plans now.

The downtown expressway will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday so construction crews can demolish the former Dixie Terminal ramps that carried buses between Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

"Friday night there are no events at all on the riverfront," said Don Gindling, the city's Fort Washington Way construction manager. "So that is one reason we chose the night."

If the work isn't finished the first night, Fort Washington Way will close again from midnight until 10 a.m. Sunday.

They will wait until midnight to close the expressway to give football fans plenty of time to get out of downtown after the 7:30 p.m. Bengals game against the Detroit Lions at Cinergy Field, Mr. Gindling said.

If work isn't done by 10 a.m. Sunday, Fort Washington Way is scheduled to close again at 10 p.m. Sunday and reopen at 4 a.m. Monday, before morning rush hour.

Here are some alternatives:

- Southbound Interstate 75 - eastbound Fort Washington Way traffic can exit at Pete Rose Way to go through downtown and connect with Columbia Parkway or Interstate 471. From downtown, motorists will be able to get on Columbia Parkway and Interstate 471 via Pete Rose Way and Levee Way.

- Northbound Interstate 71 - Interstate 75 traffic from Kentucky to Interstate 71 northbound can take I-75 to the Norwood Lateral (Ohio 562) or Interstate 275 to return to I-71.

- Motorists headed southbound on I-71 through Cincinnati can take I-275 or the Norwood Lateral to I-75. They can also take I-471 southbound to I-275 to return to I-71.

- The Eggleston Avenue exit and Reading - Gilbert exit will still be open off I-71 to get into downtown.

- The Fifth Street and Seventh Street exits will remain open off I-75.
