Alternatives to closed bridge
Levee Way becomes a two-way access

Thursday, August 20, 1998

BY TANYA ALBERT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Main Street bridge over Fort Washington Way is scheduled to close Saturday, but downtown motorists will gain a new east-west access route along the riverfront.

The bridge closure should not cause problems for drivers, said John Deatrick, an engineer with the city of Cincinnati and the highway project manager. It will most affect drivers headed north across the Roebling Suspension Bridge.

"It's just redirected," Mr. Deatrick said.

Instead of heading across the Main Street bridge, which isn't scheduled to reopen until 2000, drivers will need to turn left onto Levee Way and right on Vine Street. Signs will point which direction motorists should go.

Pedestrians who used the Main Street bridge will need to use the stairway at Race Street to cross Fort Washington Way between the riverfront and downtown.

Also on Saturday, Levee Way becomes a two-way street. It is an old series of on - off ramps across the top of the floodwall that were connected to make a roadway. Levee Way will link downtown with Pete Rose Way, the Roebling Suspension Bridge and Covington to give motorists another route into downtown streets. For example:

- Covington to Cincinnati: Roebling Suspension Bridge north and turn west on Levee Way. Take a quick north on to the Vine Street overpass.

- Downtown Cincinnati to Covington: Race Street overpass south and turn east on Levee Way. Turn south on to the Roebling Suspension Bridge.
