School, road funds on fall ballot

Friday, August 21, 1998

BY ANNE MICHAUD
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Tax increases to repair roads and school buildings will dominate the fall ballot in Hamilton County, it appears, as the deadline for November measures passed Thursday afternoon.

In Clermont County, fire and life safety issues are pre-eminent on the ballot, with six of eight issues involving funding for such services.

For Hamilton County, only one countywide property tax is scheduled, for mental health services. The tax would replace an expiring levy and increase it by 35 percent, in part to keep up with growing demand.

And all of Hamilton County will be able to cast a vote for or against Broadway Commons as the site of the next Reds stadium.

Anderson Township, Reading and Symmes Township have all proposed road repair levies.

Along with road repair, the Anderson measure would pave a walkway linking the township's most populous neighborhoods with businesses and the public library.

Reading is seeking to beautify and bring new life to the Reading Road corridor. To accomplish this, the city would raise earnings taxes.

Symmes Township would repave roads and repair sidewalks.

Five local school districts -- Loveland, Sycamore, Finneytown, North College Hill and Southwest -- have proposed raising taxes to either add to school building space or renovate existing facilities. Three other school districts are seeking increases in their operating levies: Great Oaks Vocational, Princeton and Sycamore. Some small cities and villages are preparing for growth, while another, Cleves, may phase itself out with the November vote.

Golf Manor and Glendale have proposed renewing their operating levies, Glendale's at a slight increase.

Cleves voters may eliminate the village altogether, making it into a neighborhood of Miami Township. Some residents began pushing this measure when they learned that the local tax to support the village government is higher than many other municipalities, without a significant gain in quality of services.
