Bonnie Web sites crowded, but have timely data

Thursday, August 27, 1998

BY TANYA ALBERT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Internet users blessed with a little patience can tap into wind speed, location and other up-to-the-minute Hurricane Bonnie information that the National Weather Service is monitoring. Web surfers can browse sites that share data taken from stations set up to monitor conditions off the Atlantic shore.

But, beware: The Web surfing is slow going because so many people are trying to call up certain Web pages.

The National Hurricane Center had so many visitors Tuesday, it shut down its Web site, a spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said Wednesday. About 1 million people tried to visit the page in one hour, he said.

Computer users who went to the center's Web page at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov Wednesday were directed to a page with links to sites that can provide detailed information.

To get current conditions at buoys, Internet users can go to http://www.nws.fsu.edu/buoy and focus in on the region and specific station they want information on.

Other Web sites that provide information on Hurricane Bonnie or provide links to Web sites to get more information on the hurricane:
