Monroe police promote "Beat the Heat" program

Monday, August 31, 1998

MONROE -- Police Capt. Tom Bishop will join hundreds of officers and sheriff's deputies nationally when he promotes local efforts to "Beat the Heat" at the Monroe City Fest.

Capt. Bishop will be at the festival Sept. 11-13 to talk to the community about the program, designed to promote positive interaction between young people and law enforcement agents.

"Probably the biggest thing we hope to accomplish is to make some contact with high school students," Capt. Bishop said.

One of the goals of Beat the Heat is to educate young people about the dangers of illegal drug and alcohol use, and to encourage young people to stay in school.

"The local program, to say the least, is in its infancy," Capt. Bishop said. "We're in the process of building up our presentation."

The program theme nationally this year is "Racing for Education." To help illustrate that theme, Capt. Bishop has restored a 1979 Chevrolet Monza that he will have on display at the Monroe City Fest.
