College honors Glenn, wife

Saturday, September 5, 1998

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Muskingum College has appointed Sen. John Glenn and his wife, Annie, to its faculty.

Mr. Glenn, D-Ohio, will be given the title of distinguished alumni professor in public affairs. Mrs. Glenn's title will be distinguished alumni fellow in speech communications.

The Glenns grew up in New Concord, are graduates of Muskingum and have received honorary degrees from the college. Both are members of its board of trustees.

Mr. Glenn, 77, in 1962 became the first American to orbit Earth. He will return to space when he takes part in a shuttle mission on Oct. 29.

"The college community is excited and appreciative that despite a professional life that has carried him away from New Concord and Muskingum College and literally around the earth, Senator Glenn and Mrs. Glenn will further their involvement with the college," said President Samuel W. Speck.

"We both feel fortunate to be members of the Muskingum family," Mrs. Glenn said. "Our roots here go deep. We grew up with the college as our back yard and we love coming back home to Muskingum. The foundation we built here has served us well throughout our lives."

Muskingum is a liberal arts college with 1,400 students.
