Where'd summer go? It'll be back shortly

Wednesday, September 9, 1998

BY WILLIAM A. WEATHERS
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Near-record low temperatures in the 40s overnight were expected to offer a brisk wake-up call for Greater Cincinnati commuters today.

"Welcome to fall -- at least for the next couple of days," said Mark Tobin, an AccuWeather Inc. meteorologist.

Mr. Tobin said a jacket or sweat shirt should be enough for those venturing out this morning. "But you probably will be taking it off by the afternoon."

The overnight low was expected to be 47 or 48 degrees, approaching the record low 45 for this date set in 1949, Mr. Tobin said. Today's forecast calls for daytime highs in the low 70s with sunny skies, he said. The same is expected Thursday. That's quite a contrast to last week -- when hot, humid weather prompted smog alerts -- and to Sunday, when Riverfest crowds sweltered in 94-degree heat. A strong cold front that moved into Greater Cincinnati on Monday swept the warm air to the south, Mr. Tobin said. But summer-like temperatures should return by the weekend.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the 80s on Friday and the 80s on Saturday," Mr. Tobin said.
