School board, superintendent plot course
Moderator for retreats will cost $10,000

Thursday, September 10, 1998

Cincinnati Board of Education members and Superintendent Steven Adamowski are scheduled to meet Sept. 24 for the first of possibly three fall retreats intended to outline the district's reform strategies and goals for the year.

Board members Wednesday agreed to spend $10,000 to hire facilitator Gloria Frazier of the International Center on Collaboration in Florida to moderate the meetings.

At the retreats -- which Mr. Adamowski said he preferred to call "advances" -- the superintendent and board members plan to determine their roles and responsibilities as the district tackles more reforms.

Besides the retreats, Mr. Adamowski, who started as chief of the 48,000-student district last month, plans several other meeting changes.

He hopes to hold quarterly community dialogues, where school board members, district administrators and citizens talk about educational issues.

He also aims to organize an annual, joint meeting of the school board and Cincinnati City Council and a yearly legislative lunch or breakfast with state lawmakers. The board's legislative committee has played host to lawmakers in past meetings.

School board members said they will consider Mr. Adamowski's suggested changes.

If approved, those changes probably would take effect in January.
