HARRISON -- Arson is the suspected cause of a fire Monday morning that destroyed a two-story frame Victorian house.

Damage was estimated at $100,000 to the house at 301 Broadway, at the corner of Sycamore Street, in the heart of the older section of the city, Fire Chief Alan Kinnett said.

Chief Kinnett said three families -- about 11 people -- were living in the house, which was built in the early 1900s and was later divided into apartments.

It appears the blaze was set outside a bathroom addition at a corner of the house. Flames shot up the old wooden siding into the attic. The fire started about 6:30 a.m., Chief Kinnett said.

Fire officials said they didn't think the owner lived in the house; they were trying to confirm the owner's identity Monday afternoon. The displaced families were provided food, clothing and shelter by the American Red Cross. They were staying in area motels Monday night.

County arson investigators were called to the scene and evidence was gathered.

Firefighters from the Whitewater Township and Crosby Township fire departments assisted Harrison, Chief Kinnett said. There were no injuries.
