Slightly more than 20 percent of the way through a 56-day campaign, Cincinnati's United Way and Community Chest has raised slightly more than 20 percent of its goal.
The organization has raised $10,915,795 of its $53,830,000 goal.
The campaign kicked off Sept. 3. Last year, the organization raised $52 million, but, after four weeks, had reached only 17 percent of its goal.
Campaign leaders this year are optimistic as more of the 1,950 businesses that run employee campaigns get into the swing.
"We are now into the thick of employee campaigns," said Daniel J. Meyer, chairman, president and CEO of Cincinnati Milacron and chairman of this year's campaign.
"Most of the planning is done. Volunteers, agency speakers and staff are busy participating in kickoffs at companies and organizations around the community."
He asked that anyone whose business has not been contacted about running a United Way campaign call 762-7100.
Campaign leaders hope a few special promotions will help them reach their goal. Coca-Cola and Bigg's will give 50 cents to the United Way for every six pack of half-liter bottles of Coke bought at a Bigg's store; and on Oct. 3, McAlpin's will hold a special sale to benefit the United Way -- tickets are $5 and can be obtained from United Way agencies or the customer service centers at the stores.
