TO BILL CLINTON: DO THE RIGHT THING
Put America first and resign now

Thursday, September 17, 1998

Dear Mr. President:

You are arriving in Cincinnati today to visit the home of your friend and generous contributor Stanley Chesley -- without even the pretense of a public appearance to justify the cost to Cincinnati to ensure your safety and convenience. We'd object to that anytime, but today it is especially odious -- one more insult added to the insufferable injuries you have done to our nation and the presidency.

As you swing through our city to wring out a few more dollars from Democrats, we cannot forget that even in the midst of the storm that is inundating your presidency, there is another dark cloud on the horizon: a looming investigation into illegal fundraising in your 1996 campaign.

Now that your credibility is in shreds; now that we know how you have abused the prerogatives of your public trust in such a disgraceful way, how can we believe it when you deny campaign violations that could endanger our national security?

A man who would lie to the nation and obstruct justice to hide sex with an intern in the Oval Office would hardly hesitate to lie and conceal illegal donations that may have enabled the Chinese government to buy sensitive U.S. military technology.

This is the No. 1 reason you should resign: The terrible judgment you have exhibited is frightening to contemplate in someone who has so much power.

Reason No. 2: Your authority is crippled beyond repair. You have irretrievably sacrificed our respect by using the White House like a cheap motel, then shamelessly lying in our faces about it for months. You have turned your presidency into an X-rated farce.

Reason No. 3: What has been clear to many from the start is now becoming clearer to the rest of America: You lack the character to put your nation ahead of yourself. From draft evader to finger wagger, character counts. Your reprehensible behavior has reminded us that anyone who won't put America first doesn't deserve to be president.

Reason No. 4: Your excuses have only confirmed that you are unfit to be president. Perjury is serious -- it is the strategy of the guilty man who has bigger crimes to hide. And despite the ludicrous claims from your lawyers, you lied -- defiantly, repeatedly, twice under oath. That's a felony.

Reason No. 5: America deserves better. We deserve a chance to stop wallowing in the reeking landfill of trashy scandals you have hauled us into. You may be forgiven by those you have abused, but you cannot be absolved of the damage you have done to the nation and the presidency.

America needs to demonstrate that such immoral, unethical behavior will not be condoned. Your last refuge is that what is grossly unpopular is not technically illegal, and what is grossly illegal is not yet unpopular. That is pathetic.

It's about time you were held accountable, Mr. Clinton. If you had not been let off the hook so many times before, you probably would not be facing impeachment and the legacy it carries. Those who are still going through contortions to make excuses for you are doing no favors for anyone -- you included.

Our nation's Founders (below) made it clear that we the people, through our elected representatives in the House and Senate, do not have to tolerate someone who has so little regard for our nation and its highest office. Your conduct alone would be grounds for impeachment. We don't need a criminal violation -- but you have provided that too.

You have disgraced yourself and the presidency. Unless you leave now, the nation will be dragged through more months of sleaze and mendacity. Each day you remain makes it harder to remove the stains you will leave on our White House.

If you have any decency, self respect or honor, you will spare us the ordeal of removing you by impeachment. Do the right thing: Resign.
