AMBERLEY VILLAGE -- President Clinton's fund-raising visit to a private home here today should bring out the usual -- Secret Service, road closures, political supporters and their money.
And protesters.
The luncheon at the Belkay Lane home of Cincinnati attorney Stanley Chesley is expected to draw 40 or 50 attendees and raise about $500,000 for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Village Police Lt. Roger Petrey said police have received "a few calls" from potential protesters, but the number who will line the route to Mr. Chesley's home is speculation, since no permits are required.
The president will be in Cincinnati for about four hours before going on to Boston for more fund-raising events. He will make no public appearances while in Cincinnati.
Cincinnati Mayor Roxanne Qualls, the Democratic candidate for Congress in the 1st Congressional District, will attend the luncheon. Ms. Qualls had invited the president to visit one of the Cincinnati neighborhoods that have applied for a federal "empowerment zone" grant.
Ms. Qualls said Wednesday White House officials had declined the invitation. They said it would be unfair to other cities competing for grant money if the president visited a Cincinnati neighborhood.
