Chabot dances around questions on Clinton

Sunday, September 20, 1998

BY LEW MOORES
The Cincinnati Enquirer

U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot spent Saturday afternoon campaigning in Green Township and Cheviot but west side voters were more interested in presidential scandal than congressional campaigning.

Mr. Chabot kept reminding voters that as a member of the House Judiciary Committee he needs to hear all the evidence in the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal.

"What we going to see (Monday)? Any good?" asked Keith Riehl, who approached Mr. Chabot at the family festival at Oak Hills High School, asking about the videotape of the president's testimony. "You don't have any skeletons in your closet, do you?" asked Mr. Riehl, laughing.

"I hope not," said Mr. Chabot.

Most of the comments he's received lately, Mr. Chabot said, have to do with the president rather than Mr. Chabot's race against Democrat and Cincinnati Mayor Roxanne Qualls.

Some of those who approached him Saturday were aware of his role on the judiciary committee.

"I've been writing letters, I'm very disgusted," said Cathy Baumer, who lives in Green Township, as she approached Mr. Chabot at the festival. "He's been the laughing stock of the country. I have no faith in him, I don't."

Mr. Chabot said will spend part of today campaigning before the Bengals-Packers game at Cinergy Field, before returning to Washington D.C. on Tuesday. He said the week will be taken up sifting through about 15 more boxes of evidence passed on to the Judiciary committee from the Starr investigation.
