Fall festival season begins

Thursday, September 24, 1998

BY JENNY CALLISON

The first weekend of autumn is bringing bushels of activities for residents of Butler and Warren counties.

Here's a look at the festivals, celebrations and historical re-enactments:

  • Getting an early start on the weekend, the Valley Vineyards Wine Festival near Morrow begins today and continues through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. Visitors may try their hands -- and feet -- at crushing grapes, sampling wines and listening to music. An amateur wine-making contest takes place Saturday.

    Information: (513) 899-2485.

Food and craft booths, entertainment, a 10K race, a used-book sale and thousands of apples will highlight the annual Applefest in downtown Lebanon on Saturday.

    Applefest runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    Information on the YMCA-sponsored race: (513) 932-1424. Festival information: (937) 885-5735.

  • To make sure there's plenty to do in Lebanon, the Warren County Historical Society will have a bread sale and flea market Saturday at the museum, 105 S. Broadway. Shoppers will find a variety of homemade breads, household items and books. Proceeds will benefit the museum's acquisitions fund.

Hours of the sale are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Information: (513) 932-1817.

  • Hidden Valley Fruit Farm also is celebrating the arrival of apple season. It will host Apple Days on Saturday and Sunday.

The focus is on families, with horse-drawn hayrides; craft booths; and such kids' activities as apple bobbing, apple tossing and a haunted barn. Hours: noon to 7 p.m. each day. Free admission and parking. The farm is on Ohio 48 at Lebanon.

    Information: (513) 932-1869.

  • If you'd rather stay inside and try your luck, the Middletown Fine Arts Center will have a Casino Night beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday. The event, which benefits the center, costs $15 per person or $25 per couple. Games featured include bingo, poker and blackjack. The Fine Arts Center is at 130 N. Verity Parkway in Middletown. Information: 424-2417.

  • In Butler County's Morgan Township, the Gov. Bebb Preserve Pioneer Group hosts its 20th annual Pioneer Days on Saturday and Sunday.

From noon to 6 p.m. each day, visitors can watch demonstrations of such skills as blacksmithing, weaving, candle-dipping, basket-making and frontier cooking. Some items produced will be for sale. Military re-enactors also will be on the scene. Cost is $2 for ages 12 and older; $1 for children and seniors.

    Information: 867-5835.

  • History buffs can travel back in time at Preble County's Fort St. Clair. Military re-enactors from as far as Canada will be encamped Saturday and Sunday for the fort's annual Historical Days festival. From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, the fort will become a living timeline of military history from the French and Indian War through Desert Storm. Cost is $2 for ages 12 and older.

    Information: 456-4125.

  • The annual Taste of Gospel Music will feature soloists, small groups and choirs from more than 50 churches Saturday and Sunday. The festival will be on Hamilton's Courthouse Square from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

    Information: 868-3868.
