Middletown chase leaves 3 cops hurt

Thursday, September 24, 1998

MIDDLETOWN -- A motorist fled an accident Wednesday, leading police on a chase through downtown streets and hitting four police cruisers. Three officers suffered minor injuries during the pursuit that began in the 1600 block of Lafayette Avenue about 6:53 p.m. One was cut by glass, and two others suffered minor injuries.

Arrested afterward was Carol A. Wilson, 44, of Walnut Street in Franklin, who was charged with six counts of attempted vehicular assault, willfully eluding, fleeing the scene, resisting arrest and possession of unlabeled drugs.

Police said the incident began when officers responded to the report of an accident.

When they arrived, a witness told an officer that a car just leaving the scene was involved in the crash.

Refusing to stop for police, the driver headed east on Lafayette, through several side streets and back onto Lafayette.

The car hit a police cruiser at Lafayette and Verity Parkway and two others at Lafayette and Main Street before ramming a fourth. During the pursuit, the driver's speed was never above 40 mph, police said.
