Clerk fined for selling sex tapes

Saturday, September 26, 1998

HAMILTON -- A video store clerk convicted of selling sexually explicit videos to a 17-year-old boy received a suspended six-month jail sentence Friday.

Billie J. Doan, 60, of Cleves, who works for VIP Video in Millville, sold the videos to the boy even though he told her he was 37 and did not have an ID with him. He was part of a police undercover operation.

Judge H.J. Bressler told her he was disturbed that she told a probation officer that she thought she was set up and entrapped by police.

"The court doesn't believe you were entrapped at all," he said. "You were given the opportunity to commit an illegal act and you did it."

A jury convicted her in July of a misdemeanor charge of disseminating material harmful to a juvenile.

Jurors acquitted her of a felony charge of disseminating obscene material to a juvenile.

In addition to the suspended jail sentence, Judge Bressler ordered her to serve 120 hours of community service and pay a $1,000 fine and court costs.

"I did make a mistake," Ms. Doan told the judge before sentencing. Her attorney, Mary Lou Kusel, said Ms. Doan is so careful now that she asked every customer for an ID, even those who appear elderly. "It's not going to happen again," she said.

Judge Bressler told Ms. Doan he suspected she sold the videos to the boy simply to make money.

"You thought a 17-year-old boy looked like he was 37 years old?" he asked her.

"Yes, I did," she replied.
