Man arrested in 5 cases of arson

Wednesday, September 30, 1998

NEW RICHMOND -- Police have arrested a suspect in five cases of arson here last week.

The identity of the suspect, a 20-year-old male village resident, is being withheld out of concern for his family's safety, New Richmond Police Officer Floyd Henderson said Tuesday.

He is being held in lieu of $45,000 bond, police said.

No one was injured in the early-morning fires Sept. 23.

No damage estimates were available, but Officer Henderson said several of the fires caused only minimal damage.

The structures set on fire, none of which was a dwelling, included a telephone pole on Walnut Street, a shed attached to the First Baptist Church on Western Avenue and an unoccupied car parked on Market Street.

The most potentially dangerous might have been the telephone pole arson because the pole had a transformer atop it, Officer Henderson said.

The investigation involved the New Richmond fire and police departments, the Clermont County Sheriff's Department and Arson Task Force, and the FBI.

Officer Henderson indicated more arrests were possible. A press conference is scheduled today at the sheriff's department.
