Cincinnati City Council deferred action Wednesday on a proposal to pay the families of slain Police Officer Daniel Pope and Spc. Ronald Jeter about $20,000 in funeral and related expenses.
A majority of council members said Monday they were prepared to vote for such a measure. But one of the authors of the proposal, Councilman Phil Heimlich, was out of town Wednesday.
Council has been under pressure to act since Linda Pope, Officer Pope's widow, complained last week that city officials had not delivered on a promise to pay the funeral and travel expenses of family members who came to Cincinnati for the services.
Council's proposal to pay Mrs. Pope and Brenda Collier, Spc. Jeter's mother, may be acted on in a few weeks.
