MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- It was found wandering the parking lot of a taxidermist -- of all places -- and now it's being held at the police station here and fed a steady diet of celery.
Police think it is either an escapee, or its owner set it free after becoming alarmed at its size.
Regardless, police would like to find the owner -- or a new home -- for a 4 1/2-foot iguana that now rests in a pet carrier in a corner of the sergeant's office at the Miami Township Police Department in Clermont County.
Sgt. Mike Rossmann said they had considered fitting the iguana with a collar and having it sit out in the reception area, but the clerks weren't keen on the idea.
The iguana obviously belonged to someone, they say, because in spite of its size it's quite docile.
"I've picked it up a couple of times and it doesn't get crazy on you or anything," said Sgt. Rossmann.
The reptile is mostly a vegetarian and quite harmless, although it looks formidable. Iguanas can reach up to 6 feet in length.
Euthanizing it would be a last resort; police would like to find a suitable home.
"We'd like to find somebody who could use it for educational purposes," said Sgt. Rossmann. "Maybe a local science teacher who will take it for the classroom, or a zoology or biology teacher. It lets you pick it up.
