United Way passes halfway mark

Friday, October 2, 1998

BY B.G. GREGG
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati's United Way & Community Chest has surpassed the halfway point in its campaign for a record $53,830,000 goal.

Campaign Chairman Daniel J. Meyer said the campaign had raised $27,049,567 so far, 50.2 percent of the goal.

The campaign kicked off Sept. 3 and ends Oct. 29.

Last year, with one month left in the campaign, the organization had raised $16 million, or 31 percent of its goal.

Mr. Meyer, chairman, president and CEO of Cincinnati Milacron, attributed this year's success so far to three key strategies: increasing corporate gifts, Leadership Givers (those who donate more than $2,500) and new employee campaigns.

"While the campaign is moving forward, there is still a lot to be done," he said. "We have yet to hear results from the majority of employee campaigns now under way."

Those businesses that have not been contacted about running a campaign should call the United Way at 762-7100.

McAlpin's is holding a sale Saturday to benefit the United Way. It runs from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and tickets are $5, available at the door.

Also, for each six-pack of half-liter bottles of Coca-Cola bought at Bigg's stores through the end of November, the two companies will donate 50 cents to the United Way.
