Vine Street overpass in its last week

Sunday, October 11, 1998

Motorists traveling into downtown Cincinnati from Kentucky, Pete Rose Way or Levee Way will notice a new detour beginning Saturday.

Construction workers will be closing the Vine Street overpass. The Race Street overpass will be open instead, and it will be converted to two-way.

The Vine Street overpass, which connects the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge to Third Street, will close to vehicles and pedestrians. Detour signs will be in place.

The Race Street detour will be in effect until the end of November, when a temporary extension from the Suspension Bridge is expected to be in place.

The extension will provide two lanes of traffic in each direction and a sidewalk on the west side. This temporary structure will reconnect the Suspension Bridge to Third Street, in the area formerly occupied by the Dixie Terminal Transit Ramps, providing direct access from Northern Kentucky.

Until the extension is complete, pedestrians will be instructed, with detour signs, to use the staircase at Mehring Way to Stadium Drive, then north to Pete Rose Way and a connecting staircase at Race Street.

The Vine Street overpass, meanwhile, will be demolished to continue excavation for the construction of Fort Washington Way's retaining wall. The overpass will be reconstructed to connect with the new Second Street when the project is complete, in August 2000.
