Plane crash at party injures 2

Sunday, October 11, 1998

WAYNE TOWNSHIP -- Two men were injured Saturday afternoon when their plane crash-landed in northern Warren County.

David Gerspacher, 30, of Waynesville and Jim Zappe, 59, of Centerville suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, said Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Tim Patton.

The two men were flown to University Hospital. Mr. Gerspacher was listed in fair condition, and Mr. Zappe was in serious condition late Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m.

Police could not determine which man flew the plane, but said it took off from the Waynesville airport.

The two had been at a private party at Mr. Gerspacher's home in the 6500 block of Township Line Road when they decided to take a flight for fun, Trooper Patton said.

The plane was flying low over the gathering when the engine suddenly cut out and the plane -- a single-engine, two-seater Piper Cub J-3 -- nose-dived into a field.

Those at the party, including family members of the two men, witnessed the crash and alerted authorities.
