Jean Schlumberger was a legend of jewelry design and the designer of choice for celebrities across the globe.

Wednesday through Oct. 25, his most imaginative works will be on display at Tiffany & Co., downtown.

The collection features more than 100 pieces that showcase Mr. Schlumberger's use of unexpected color and gemstone combinations, such as:

The sea bird clip, which combines a bird's beak and head with a serpent's body in pave diamonds with blue and black enamel, rubies and spike-like 18-carat gold plumage.

The unicorn clip of diamonds and yellow sapphires with a wild mane of amethysts.

The frame clip with a center sapphire closed with pave diamonds and draped with a diamond baguette ribbon.

Mr. Schlumberger created jewelry exclusively for Tiffany & Co. from 1955 until his death in 1987 at age 80. His signature was wit with a hint of surprise.

"I try to make everything look as if it were growing, uneven, at random, organic, in motion," he once said. "I want to capture the irregularity of the universe. I observe nature and I find verve."

Pieces in the collection cost from $10,000 to $150,000, but Tiffany carries other Schlumberger pieces starting at $1,000.
