  • Information:
    721-7447.
  • Entry fee:
    $40 to Dec. 31;
    $50 to April 15;
    $65 after April 15.
  • Organizers expect 6,500 marathoners to participate. Of that number approximately 1,500 will be taking on 26.2 miles for the first time.

    The Enquirer asked runners who have never done a marathon if they would be willing to let us follow their training for a series of articles leading up to the marathon.

    Via e-mail, letter, fax and phone, we received 78 enthusiastic responses. Several said having the Tristate reading about them would be added incentive for them to stick to training.

    From the volunteers, we selected three solo runners and a neighborhood team of five. We also chose two alternates in the event somebody drops out.

    Each month on the Health page through May, we'll feature updates on the runners' training highs and the lows, along with a specialized feature on marathon training. Today, we discuss sources of marathon training programs.

    You can obtain a marathon training program for beginners designed by running enthusiast Bob Roncker especially for the Flying Pig Marathon. It's available at http://www.runningspot.com.
