  • Name: The Monteith Flying Js: Five buddies John Fovel, Joe Hellmann, John Lang, Jack Greiner and John Bullock. Mr. Greiner is 39; the rest are 37. They took their name from the Hyde Park street where four of them live. Mr. Bullock, who lives in Mount Lookout, is an "honorary" member. All are married with children.

  • Occupation: Mr. Fovel, a vice president of sales; Dr. Hellmann, physician; Mr. Lang, environmental engineer; Mr. Greiner, attorney; Mr. Bullock, pharmaceutical salesman.

  • Running experience: Mr. Lang, who has run a marathon before, will coach the neophytes.

"Three of the five run on a regular basis," Mr. Fovel, the group's spokesman, wrote on his application. "The other two are basketball players who own running shoes."

Since their marathon training began in July, each member is doing two solo runs during the week. The group does its long run together early Saturday mornings.

  • Goal: To finish.
