REDS BALLPARK: THE REGION
Hamilton County voters will make the call, but the Reds are a regional team.
The siting of the Reds new ballpark has ramifications far beyond Hamilton County. Fans from as far away as West Virginia consider the Reds their team.

Broadway backers argue the riverfront would be better off with one fewer stadium and more parks.
Broadway proponents argue the county should spread its resources instead of investing in one area. Riverfront backers insist they want Broadway to be developed, but housing would be a better fit.
Context
A 1997 report prepared by ZHA Inc. of Annapolis, Md., estimated 30 percent of spending by sports fans goes to Northern Kentucky, and 10 percent is spent outside the region.

Advocates argue the Reds could be part of a reborn riverfront, a new "postcard" for the region anchored by stadiums on each end, a National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in the middle and lush, green parks.
The Reds want to be an important part of the "riverfront renaissance." Broadway backers question why the region canšt have two postcards.
The riverfront is Northern Kentucky's preferred site. Lots of Kentucky fans park in Covington and walk across the Roebling Suspension Bridge to attend games. Bars and restaurants on Northern Kentucky's riverfront get business from games, too. Broadway backers say that's an argument for their site: Keep the spending in Hamilton County.

A 1997 report prepared by ZHA Inc. of Annapolis, Md., estimated 30 percent of spending by sports fans goes to Northern Kentucky, and 10 percent is spent outside the region.
A Broadway ballpark, the study said, would keep more of that spending in Ohio and would generate "greater short-term economic benefits to both Over-the-Rhine and downtown" than a riverfront site.
A disadvantage of Broadway, the report says, is that private investment on the riverfront probably won't happen without both stadiums there.
