2 men dead in crash

Monday, October 19, 1998

HANOVER TOWNSHIP -- Two men were killed and three children injured Sunday in a head-on collision on U.S. 27 just north of McGonigle in Butler County.

Charles E. Stewart, 32, of Fairfield was driving erratically northbound at a high rate of speed, passing cars on the right berm and on the left, Sheriff Harold Don Gabbard said.

Just north of McGonigle, Mr. Stewart's Chrysler sideswiped three northbound vehicles while passing them in a no-passing zone, the sheriff said.

Shortly after, at 11:19 a.m., his car struck a southbound 1988 Mercury Cougar head-on.

Killed were Mr. Stewart and the driver of the oncoming car, Dan. A. Lunsford, 33, of Hamilton.

Neither was wearing a seat belt, Sheriff Gabbard said.

Three children in the Mercury were injured.

John Stolle, 5, of Hamilton and Sara Sears, 6, of Fairfield were flown by AirCare helicopter to Children's Hospital Medical Center in Corryville.

They were in serious condition late Sunday.

Tim Lunsford, 12, of Hamilton was taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, where he was treated and released.
