More charges possible in rape of baby

Wednesday, October 21, 1998

BY TANYA BRICKING
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Police are considering more charges against the 19-year-old Westwood man charged with raping his girlfriend's 7-month-old baby.

Doctors have discovered the baby suffers from a sexually transmitted disease and injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome, Cincinnati police say.

The baby, hospitalized since Friday, remained in serious condition Tuesday at Children's Hospital.

Shawn Brumfield remained jailed at the Hamilton County Justice Center, accused of raping the boy once on Thursday and once on Friday.

Mr. Brumfield, the mother's boyfriend of four months who had been baby-sitting, allegedly called his girlfriend at work after the Friday attack, telling her the baby was sick. The mother went home and took the baby to Children's Hospital, where doctors discovered internal injuries.

But police are trying to determine whether the baby also was sexually abused before that, said Lt. Stephen Luebbe, commander of the police division's personal crimes unit.

For now, Mr. Brumfield, of the 3000 block of McHenry Avenue, is charged with two counts of rape. The charges are first-degree felonies, each punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. A grand jury could consider more charges. An indictment is expected by Oct. 28.
