United Way campaign leaders are $17 million short of their record goal with only nine days left in the campaign.
Campaign chairman Daniel J. Meyer announced Tuesday that the United Way & Community Chest has raised $36,590,976 so far, about 68 percent of the $53,830,000 goal.
Traditionally, United Way receives a large amount of donations in the final week. Last year, the campaign was 17 percent short of its goal going into the final day.
The 1997 United Way & Community Chest campaign reached a record $52,009,020 Thursday, the last day of its annual drive, officials said.
"We anticipate this will be a very big week," said Mr. Meyer, chairman, president and CEO of Milacron Inc.
Mr. Meyer did admit he was a little worried.
"Our pace continues to be slower than we'd like at this point in the campaign," he said. "We had hoped to be closer to 80 percent of the goal by now."
