Gen-X'ers driven to distraction

Thursday, October 22, 1998

BY TANYA ALBERT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

If you're driving next to a Gen-X'er, you might want to take a closer look into the car.

The 16-to-35-year-olds might be doing more than driving.

The younger generation is more prone than their baby boomer elders to use cars as a second dressing room, a survey released Wednesday has found.

More than 33 percent of Gen-X'ers say they've changed clothes while stopped in traffic, according to a nationwide survey of nearly 15,000 drivers by Pennzoil Products Co. Only 21 percent of baby boomers have.

And 25 percent of Generation X'ers say they've applied makeup. Only 17 percent of baby boomers freshened up.

The only place baby boomers out did Gen-X'ers: flossing their teeth.

About 8 percent of boomers flossed in the car; about 6 percent of Generation X.

"It looks like that age group is more into grooming," said Caryn Crump, Pennzoil's vice president of marketing.

But it doesn't appear that the 16-to-35-year-olds are the only ones providing entertainment at traffic lights.

The top five funniest things people surveyed said they have seen on the roads:

  • Romantic encounters.

  • Dogs behind the steering wheel.

  • People brushing their teeth.

  • Men arguing with pets.

  • Cats sitting on drivers' heads.
