Softball league theft investigated

HAMILTON -- City police are investigating the alleged theft of at least $12,000 from a bank account of the Hamilton Softball Leagues over a four-year period.

The leagues on Tuesday filed a police report here alleging that someone removed the funds from the account at an unidentified bank in downtown Hamilton.

"I understand it's in excess of $12,000," said Hamilton Police Sgt. Thomas Kilgour. "They do have a suspect and the matter remains under investigation."

He said the amount could be as high as $16,000.

Investigators think only one suspect was involved, but Sgt. Kilgour could not comment further because the matter remains under investigation.

Police records indicate that the suspect is identified and can be located, and that there are witnesses in the case. Evidence has been collected and significant physical evidence is present, according to the police report.

The league organizes adult softball games and is independent from the city.

"They play on city fields, but they have their own organization," said William Phelps, Hamilton recreation director. "It's adult softball leagues."

Russ Kaefer of Fairfield, a league official who filed the police report, would not comment on the complaint other than saying it is under investigation.
