Four men hurt in I-275 crash

Saturday, October 24, 1998

An 86-year-old man suffered minor injuries Friday afternoon as he swerved across Interstate 275, hitting three vehicles and causing a semi-trailer truck to jackknife, police said.

But three others were more seriously injured.

The driver of a Ford Ranger pickup truck was unconscious when emergency crews arrived shortly after 2:30 p.m.

Police stopped traffic while a helicopter picked him up to take him to University Hospital.

Authorities would not identify the man until his family could be notified.

Walter Richter, of Pleasant Plain, had several minor cuts on his head, but declined to be treated at the scene, said Montgomery Police Sgt. Brian Knowles.

The semi-trailer truck driver, James Herzner, was treated at Bethesda North Hospital.

Mr. Richter will be cited for driving with an expired license and failing to control his vehicle, said Sgt. Knowles, who gave this account of the crash:

Mr. Richter, driving a station wagon, drifted onto the right shoulder and struck an empty, disabled car.

He swerved back onto I-275, crossed the center lane and was struck by the semi-trailer truck that jackknifed while trying to stop. Mr. Richter's car spun and struck the Ford pickup, which rolled over several times and stopped in a line of trees about 50 feet off of the highway. The driver was thrown from the pickup.

Mr. Richter's car stopped in the center lane of I-275 under the Weller Road overpass,

Montgomery police would like anyone who witnessed the accident to contact the department at 745-8555.
