Sigma Sigma Commons, the latest step in the University of Cincinnati's Master Plan, was dedicated with fireworks and pomp Friday night. The 3.43-acre area is on UC's west campus.
The $5.1 million project culminates in a 64-foot light tower, symbolizing the fraternity and school's "foundational role." The tower is named for Ronald F. Walker, a key player in financier Carl Lindner's business empire who died last year. Mr. Walker, an alumnus of UC and the fraternity, was a longtime backer of the university.
Sigma Sigma's $1.8 million donation helped fund the space. Sigma Sigma helped build this new campus green space to celebrate the fraternity's 100-year anniversary. The honorary fraternity is dedicated to bettering the school. Sigma Sigma has selected 782 members since its founding.
Other events are planned for the rest of the weekend, including dinner celebrations and a ceremony during the halftime of today's Homecoming football game.
Three more projects are planned to increase the green space at UC to complement this and other projects.
