Avoiding wayward car, Indiana driver killed

Monday, October 26, 1998


LIBERTY, Ind. -- A 57-year-old Richmond, Ind., man was killed Saturday when he apparently lost control of his car on Ind. 101 while trying to avoid an oncoming car, state police in Connersville said Sunday.

Bruce N. Miller was traveling south at 7:15 a.m. when a northbound car crossed the center line. Mr. Miller went off the road to the right, then overcorrected to the left, police said. His car struck a cement bridge. The other vehicle wasn't identified. Mr. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.

Workshop for teachers has African emphasis

A free workshop, "African Centered Schooling in the Urban Setting -- A Proven Success Model," will be 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdayat the University of Cincinnati Faculty Club.

Carol Lee (Safisha Madhubti), an associate professor of education of Northwestern University, will speak. She is founder of the New Concepts Development Center.

The workshop is open to teachers K-12. Participants are eligible for three graduate-level credit hours.

The lecture is the second in the series, "Increasing Cultural Competencies of Teachers of African American Students," sponsored by the UC College of Education, Cincinnati Public Schools, the NAACP, and the Baptist Ministers' Conference of Cincinnati.

City residents can get college assistance

The University of Cincinnati will offer a College Assistance Program to Cincinnati residents who cannot afford college.

The program offers free first-year classes for participants who meet income requirements.It also provides textbooks and tutoring. Successful students can apply for regular financial aid.

Decorations set afire at Colerain Kmart

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP -- A fire that destroyed $1,000 worth of Christmas decorations at the Kmart store on Colerain Avenue Saturday night was deliberately set, Colerain Township fire officials said Sunday.

Firefighters responded at 9:15 p.m. Saturday and found a fire in the lawn and garden area where Christmas decoration stock was being stored, said fire department spokesman Dave Jennings. Investigators determined the cause was arson.

No one was injured.

The Blue Ribbon Arson Committee is offering up to $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone who started the fire. Call Fire Lt. Hollis Love at 825-6143.

Man injures self with knife during arrest

UNION TOWNSHIP -- Charges are pending against a man who threatened Union Township (Butler County) police with a knife before turning it on himself over the weekend.

Stephen R. Bolin, 29, address unknown, was wanted for robbery and burglary by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

When township officers knocked on his door at 2:20 p.m. Saturday at the Tri County Inn, Mr. Bolin would not let them in. They entered and confronted Mr. Bolin in the bathroom, where he briefly threatened them with a large knife before cutting himself in the neck.

Police said he was flown by Air Care to University Hospital, but hospital officials said they did not have someone there under Mr. Bolin's name. Neither police department could provide further information.

Hillsboro woman injured in collision

NEW MARKET, Ohio -- A 22-year-old Hillsboro woman remained hospitalized Sunday, one day after being injured in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 50, Highland County sheriff's department said.

Carol A. Barber of McDowell Street was transported by emergency helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital. Her condition was unavailable. Ms. Barber pulled onto U.S. 50 and into the path of a car driven by Jim Lyons, 56, of Burlington, Ky. No information was available on whether Mr. Lyons was injured.

Internet crocheters mobilize to help girl

DELHI TOWNSHIP -- The College of Mount St. Joseph will raffle an afghan crocheted by people from across the United States and Canada to pay medical bills for a 7-year-old Sunman, Ind., girl.

Amber Covert, granddaughter of Mount staffer Erma Covert, was diagnosed with a brain condition called Chiari Malformation. She had surgery in April and is recovering. But her medical bills and medication aren't covered by insurance.

Mount librarian Daphne Miller contacted members of an Internet group who contributed crocheted flowers that were assembled to make the afghan, called "Flowers for Amber."

Chances, $1 each or six for $5, are available at the college's library at Delhi and Neeb roads.

The afghan is on display in the library.
