CAMPAIGN NOTEBOOK
"Wedge' Web site is a gag

Wednesday, October 28, 1998

Observers of the Reds stadium debate may already have found the renegade Web page that pokes fun at the riverfront stadium site known as Baseball on Main or the "Wedge."

The Web page -- www.baseballonmain.com -- features a "LIVE view from WedgeCam!" with a particularly unflattering picture of parking lots next to the Crown and the quote "Insist on Tunnel Vision." Behind the prank: Charlie DeSando.

Mr. DeSando is a longtime Broadway supporter and served as chairman of the Baseball at Broadway Commons Committee when Jim Tarbell ran for Cincinnati City Council last year.

"It's tongue-in-cheek," Mr. DeSando said. "The key thing to remember is we are having fun."

Mr. DeSando has been surprised by angry electronic messages from people who initially don't realize it's a fake.

The page notes in small print it is "not affiliated with Move Greater Cincinnati Forward," the name of the pro-riverfront campaign. The pro-riverfront campaign doesn't have an official Web site. Broadway Commons does: www.broadwaycommons.com

The campaigns are duking it out over Issue 11, which asks Hamilton County voters to create a county charter requiring any new Reds ballpark be built at Broadway Street and Reading Road downtown. The Reds and county already have a deal to build on the riverfront site. The Broadway camp is pushing a "yes" vote. The riverfront group is pushing "no."

Campaign Notebook is compiled by the staff of The Cincinnati Enquirer and runs Tuesday-Saturday.
