Merger fuels big Star gain

Shares of Star Banc Corp. hit a 52-week high of $77.75 Thursday amid continued investor optimism over its acquisition of Firstar Corp. Star gained $3.31 1/4 to close at $77.25. Firstar also hit a 52-week high of $58.62 1/2 before closing at $57.56 1/4, a gain of $1.93 3/4.

Shareholders for both Cincinnati-based Star and Milwaukee-based Firstar approved the merger of the two banking companies this week. As part of the deal, Star will relocate its corporate headquarters to Milwaukee. The combined company will be called Firstar.
